My piano teacher from way back used this tutor for all new pupils, my daughter started her lessons using the same tutor who now has a music degree and teaches her pupils, yes using smallwoods, I myself has re-started to teach again and I also use this tutor, it has been used succesfully for more than 50 years. It turns out (due to my amazing research skills) that the said William Smallwood, who was a composer and lived in Kendal in the Lake District, died in 1897 so this book must be one of the original piano tutor books.

Author by: Wendy Law-Yone Languange: en Publisher by: Columbia University Press Format Available: PDF, ePub, Mobi Total Read: 51 Total Download: 275 File Size: 44,5 Mb Description: Wendy Law-Yone was just fifteen when Burma's military staged a coup and overthrew the civilian government in 1962. The daughter of Ed Law-Yone, the daredevil founder and chief editor ofThe Nation, Burma's leading postwar English-language newspaper, she experienced firsthand the perils and promises of a newly independent Burma.
On the eve of Wendy's studies abroad, Ed Law-Yone was arrested and The Nation shut down. Wendy herself was briefly imprisoned. After his release, Ed fled to Thailand with his family, where he formed a government-in-exile and tried, unsuccessfully, to foment a revolution. Exiled to America with his wife and children, Ed never gave up hope that Burma would one day adopt a new democratic government. Though he died disappointed, he left in his daughter's care an illuminating trove of papers documenting the experiences of an eccentric, ambitious, humorous, and determined patriot, vividly recounting the realities of colonial rule, Japanese occupation, postwar reconstruction, and military dictatorship. This memoir tells the twin histories of Law-Yone's kin and his country, a nation whose vicissitudes continue to intrigue the world.
Author by: Bert Fraser-Reid Languange: en Publisher by: Springer Science & Business Media Format Available: PDF, ePub, Mobi Total Read: 40 Total Download: 112 File Size: 50,9 Mb Description: More than just coincidence connects a Tate & Lyle lawsuit and artificial sweetener to Jamaican-born Chemist Bert Fraser-Reid. From his first experience of Chemistry through his diabetic father, to his determination and drive as a Chemistry student in Canada, Fraser-Reid weaves a remarkable tale integrating science, law and autobiographical anecdotes. This book arises from the lawsuit brought by Tate & Lyle against companies accused of infringing its patents for sucralose, the sweet ingredient in the artificial sweetener SPLENDA which is made by chlorinating sugar. From a 1958 undergraduate intern witnessing the pioneering experiments on sugar chlorination, to being the 1991 recipient of the world’s premiere prize for carbohydrate chemistry, Fraser-Reid was groomed for his role as expert witness in the mentioned lawsuit.
Nevertheless, it seems more than his career links Fraser-Reid to the case.

On the Modern Origins of Pictorial Complexity Author: James Elkins Publisher: Routledge ISBN: Category: Art Page: 320 View: 1010 With bracing clarity, James Elkins explores why images are taken to be more intricate and hard to describe in the twentieth century than they had been in any previous century.
Why Are Our Pictures Puzzles? Uses three models to understand the kinds of complex meaning that pictures are thought to possess: the affinity between the meanings of paintings and jigsaw-puzzles; the contemporary interest in ambiguity and 'levels of meaning'; and the penchant many have to interpret pictures by finding images hidden within them. Elkins explores a wide variety of examples, from the figures hidden in Renaissance paintings to Salvador Dali's paranoiac meditations on Millet's Angelus, from Persian miniature paintings to jigsaw-puzzles. He also examines some of the most vexed works in history, including Watteau's 'meaningless' paintings, Michelangelo's Sistine Ceiling, and Leonardo's Last Supper.

Within the framework of Russian formalism, the term 'literariness' was coined. The driving force behind this theoretical inquiry was the desire to identify literature-and art in general-as a way of revitalizing human perception, which had been numbed by the automatization of everyday life. The transformative power of 'literariness' is made manifest in many media artworks by renowned artists such as Chantal Akerman, Mona Hatoum, Gary Hill, Jenny Holzer, William Kentridge, Nalini Malani, Bruce Nauman, Martha Rosler, and Lawrence Weiner. These artists, much like the young Russian and German scholars of the 20th century, use literariness as a tool to analyze the esthetics of spoken or written language within experimental film, video performance, moving image installations, and many more media-based art forms. This volume uses, as its foundation, the Russian formalist school of literary theory, with the goal of extending these theories to include contemporary concepts in film and media studies, such as neoformalism, intermediality, remediation, and postdrama.
